The operation lasted almost seven hours on the Sea of ​​Okhotsk. About 60 people managed to return to the shore on their own in the evening, said the emergency services. Some tried to reach the shore on pieces of ice, with ice shovels as rowing. During this time, the other ice fishermen drifted slowly away from the coast, surrounded by icy water.

Alerts issued by the authorities

According to some fishermen, the end of the pack ice that broke away had moved 200 meters from the coast when the rescue came to their rescue. It is the third time this week that the emergency services have been called to help fishermen stranded on drifting pack ice.

By January 22, around 300 people had already been saved. Alerts had been launched by local authorities to warn of the danger of breakage and ice drift.
