January 29, 2020 The 'Ocean Viking', a NGO ship of Sos Mediterranee and Medici Senza Frontiere, has docked at the San Cataldo pier in Taranto and has obtained this safe harbor to land the 403 people rescued in the Mediterranean (216 men, 38 women and 149 children). Four others, a woman who suffered severe fuel burns, and her three children, were flown by helicopter to Malta.

On board, the Prefecture of Taranto says, there are also 12 pregnant women, 132 unaccompanied minors (some between 11 and 13 years old) and 20 families. They come from Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Nigeria, Mali and Somalia.

On the quay a tested reception machine was set up coordinated by the Prefecture and the Municipality, with the support of the police and the Red Cross, 118, Civil Protection and voluntary service, for health checks, basic necessities and clothing.

Unaccompanied minors will be transferred to municipal facilities, the others to the Hotspot for identification and photo signaling before sorting in other centers.

Yesterday the leader of the League Matteo Salvini said that "400 migrants will land on board an NGO ship in Taranto. With the problems of work, pollution, agriculture, the only way this government has to remember Puglia is to land thousands of migrants. And it took them 4 days to grant a safe harbor, and then I report the kidnapping of the President of the Conte Council and the Minister of the Interior of Lamorgese. Is he only kidnapped when I am involved? in court".
