President LR of the Senate Gérard Larcher estimated Wednesday that with its circular limiting the “nuance” of the lists for the municipal elections, the government “breaks the thermometer” for “not seeing the reality” of the ballot. The Council of State examines Wednesday the legality of this circular, which exempts the prefects from assigning a political nuance to the lists of the municipalities of less than 9,000 inhabitants, against 1,000 inhabitants previously.

For the opposition, the government is thus trying to artificially inflate the scores of LREM, by erasing the results of small municipalities where the presidential party seems likely to achieve lower scores. "We are depriving ourselves of a barometer for evaluating political thought on the territory," said Gérard Larcher on France Culture, noting that this argument was made by some forty political scientists in a recent column in Le Monde calling for Interior Minister Christophe Castaner revising his circular.

The President of the Senate further noted that "for nearly 34,000 municipalities, the election is on a local project with local teams, which does not mean that they have no political sensitivity, at least the leader or the outgoing mayor ”. Six appeals against the circular were filed before the highest administrative court by the Les Républicains party, LR elected officials, the Socialist party, PCF elected officials and the Debout la France party. The decision should be reserved.

"It is by no means a matter of removing political labels," says Christophe Castaner about the circular on municipal elections.
