A magnitude 7.7 earthquake shook the Caribbean between Cuba and Jamaica on Tuesday, triggering a tsunami alert in the region, American specialist centers announced.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located at sea, south of the island of Cuba and northwest of that of Jamaica, at a depth estimated at 10 kilometers, said the American Institute of Geophysics (USGS ), which revised upwards a first estimate of magnitude 7.3.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which also monitors other seas, issued a tsunami alert in the process.
