The operation was carried out calmly. The security forces again dismantled this Tuesday morning a camp for migrants from Calais, the prefecture and associations announced. The latter denounce an operation "disrespectful of fundamental rights" and "ineffective".

A total of "145 isolated people, divided into five buses, were taken care of" to reception and accommodation centers and 22 others "in an irregular situation" were arrested "with a view to placement in administrative detention" , according to a statement from the prefecture.

Old gas station

The migrants were on the grounds of an old service station in the Dunes industrial area, near the old heath where thousands of people had settled before the evacuation in March 2016.

Their evacuation follows “two expulsion orders” of January 22 and 23 from the Boulogne-sur-Mer court, due to “serious security, sanitation and tranquility problems (…) for residents”, specifies the prefecture, which estimates the number of migrants in Calais at 500.

In a joint press release, L'Auberge des migrants, Utopia 56 and Human Rights Observers stated that "no document was communicated to the exiles before the operation" to inform them "in a language that they understand ".

"A costly operation in public money"

"This operation, disrespectful of fundamental rights, costly in public money, will not be surprisingly, ineffective. It will only contribute to perpetuate this insane cycle ”, criticize these associations, which regularly see migrants returning to the site after these dismantling.

"Their consent is flouted," they denounce, saying that "the public authorities are responsible for the existence of these unsanitary places and not their residents". Other similar evacuation operations had taken place in the same sector on December 3 and 20, 2019.
