The government's goal is to increase the number of police employees in the country by 10,000 by 2024. One way of becoming more is to reinstate police who have dropped out. Throughout the East region, which includes Sörmland, Östergötland and Jönköping, 16 police officers have been re-appointed since 2016, five of them in Sörmland.

- If we can attract police back then it is people with high competence. If you come back then you do it for a reason, then I know that we get a delivery when they come in and start working, says Christer Sjöqvist.

Many jumped off

Following the police reorganization in 2015, the police have had a staff turnover that was larger than before. In 2016 and 2017, around 460 police officers stopped each year for another job. A figure comparable to 179 in 2012. In 2019, the figure was 403.

Experienced police officers have sometimes passed on within the police and some have left the authority completely. The police are therefore actively working to try to get back police who are no longer there.

- It is a good method, but it will not make the main difference for us, but it is the increased allowance from the police colleges that will be the main part. But it is clear that you cannot replace someone who has worked as a police officer for 35 years with someone who has worked for three weeks, that is not how we look at it, he says.

Have become more again

At the same time, the police in the East region have gone from being 1 683 police officers in 2016 to 1,723 police officers last year. The increase is primarily due to newly trained police officers from the police college. In the local police area Eskilstuna and Strängnäs, there are today about 200 employees and by 2024 you are expected to be around 240. But the police need to be even more, in the video, Christer Sjöqvist talks about how the police will succeed.
