A Rabat court sentenced Friday to Saturday fifteen people to prison terms for participating in the theft of several watches belonging to the king of Morocco. The main suspect, a 46-year-old housekeeper who worked in one of Mohammed VI's palaces, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, said his lawyer. His accomplice was sentenced to the same penalty.

In total, the cleaning lady was accused of having stolen 36 luxury watches. She melted them to resell the raw material to shops specializing in the gold trade, before starting to sell them as is.

The other fourteen convicts, all men, are gold retailers and intermediaries. All were given a minimum of four years in prison. Arrested at the end of 2019, they were tried for "robbery" and "forming a criminal gang". Before the judge, they said they did not know the origin of the watches.

King Mohammed VI was ranked in 2014 by Forbes magazine as one of the richest personalities in the world. His fortune was then estimated at more than 2.5 billion dollars (about 2.26 million euros). The 56-year-old monarch has a large collection of luxury cars, high-quality canvases and yachts.
