Gaël Monfils (10th in the world) was eliminated Monday in the round of 16 by the Austrian Dominic Thiem (5th) who completely dominated him 6-2, 6-4, 6-4, so that there is no more Frenchmen at the Australian Open.

The Parisian thus conceded a 6th defeat in as many meetings against Thiem. The latter will face German Alexander Zverev (7th) or Russian Andrey Rublev (16th) for a place in the last square.

"I have played my best tennis since the start of the tournament, said Thiem. I felt very good. The score seems easier than the match really was. I am very happy to reach the quarter-finals for the first time here, "he said.

Monfils, eliminated in the 2nd round for the past two years, had already reached the round of 16 in 2017. His best result in Melbourne therefore remains his quarterfinal in 2016 to date.

He was the last of the 18 Frenchmen (13 in the men's table and 5 in the women's) still racing at the Australian Open. All his compatriots had been eliminated after the second round.
