The white-backed woodpecker has been attracted to Boden when residents of Degerbäcken put sebum at their bird feeds.
On the website Artportalen, people from, for example, Värmland, Dalarna and Stockholm have reported that they have seen the woodpecker in Degerbäcken. One person writes that he took a night train from Stockholm with two toddlers just to see the white-backed woodpecker.
- Some people think it is fun to see rare bird species and to count how many bird species you can see in a year. If it is not an ordinary bird, it becomes more interesting to travel far to see it, says Berth-Ove Lindström, Norrbotten's Ornithological Society.
He now wants authorities, the public, forest companies and ornithologists to come together to help the red-listed species.
- If we can get a positive message when it comes to the environment and nature, we must be afraid of those opportunities. There is so much else that is negative.
