The British war film "1917" Sam Mendes won the Hollywood Directors' Prize (DGA Awards) on Saturday, a prize traditionally predicting Oscar success.
This award places Sam Mendes at the top of the favorites for the title of best director at the Oscars next February.
"1917", which follows the time trial of two young British soldiers on the Franco-German front during the First World War, has already won the award for best dramatic film at the Golden Globes in early January, and has been nominated 10 times for Oscars.
Mr. Mendes, who already received the DGA Award over 20 years ago for "American Beauty", dedicated his award to his grandfather, whose life inspired him for the film.
"To all those who want to bury the cinema, I say: not so fast," said Mr. Mendes, welcoming the work of the directors who were nominated with him: Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Quentin Tarantino (Once upon a time. ..in Hollywood), Bong Joo-Ho (Parasite) and Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit).
