• Politics Enrique Cabanas, the key Vox man in the shadow of Santiago Abascal
  • Legislature: Vox's opposition plan: "We are not going to change, it is the PP that has to differentiate itself"

The beginning of the legislature with the formation of the new government is causing movements in Vox. The party leader, Santiago Abascal, has created a hard core to lead day-to-day in everything that has to do with the political and communicative line of training. It is the command center that pilots the announced "frontal and total" opposition against the Executive of Pedro Sánchez and Pablo Iglesias.

This dome, much smaller and more versatile than the official one, is known as the Political Action Committee and its main function is to refine the messages and adapt the strategy approved by the National Executive Committee (CEN) to current events ), which is the formal and broader body in which the national Vox leadership is and meets.

The new committee is much more exclusive. It consists of a small group of five people, as Vox sources explain to this newspaper. Four of them are permanent: the president, Santiago Abascal; the general secretary, Javier Ortega Smith; the spokesman of the parliamentary group in Congress, Iván Espinosa de los Monteros; and the person in charge of coordinating parliamentary politics, Jorge Buxadé . The fifth member is always a person of «communication», which in most cases is usually Kiko Méndez Monasterio , the main political advisor of Abascal.

This new political heart of Vox tries to meet every week, many times on Mondays, while the National Executive Committee does so much more irregularly. In many cases only once a month. Hence, the sources consulted in Vox define the new Political Action Committee as a kind of "permanent executive committee" similar to that existing in the rest of the national parties. However, there was a circumstance that Vox did not have one like that.

Political Action Committee

The Committee has been running for a few months now, but it has not been until now when it has reached a decisive importance in shaping public messages and political strategy. The electoral repetition due to Pedro Sánchez's inability to achieve the investiture and the long pre-campaign of the general elections of November 10 had led to the fact that it was the Vox Electoral Committee that carried a part of the weight in many of the decisions.

Once the political situation has entered a new phase and the demands as a third party of Congress are greater, the Political Action Committee is already leading the initiative in Vox. There, the main lines of the investiture debate or the immediate actions that are being taken to implement the “opposition without quarter” against the new PSOE and United We Government can be outlined in its three aspects: the Congress, the courts or the Street.

In these first days, a Vox initiative has already sneaked into the first level of the political debate: the parental pin introduced in Murcia and raised by the party in the other two autonomous communities where it supports the regional government, Madrid and Andalusia.

In everything that has to do with the internal and organic life of Vox, this adjustment in the organizational chart to accommodate this dome of five people has been made with total discretion and is justified in the new needs of the party as a result of its growth and media exposure. As for the election of its members, it follows an organic and operational logic. In any case, it should be noted that it returns to highlight who are in the hard core of Vox and in the circle of maximum trust to Abascal.

This dome allows Espinosa de los Monteros, the strong man of the party in Congress, to have a voice and vote in these high-level meetings, something that he could not formally exercise within the National Executive Committee because he is not part of that body. The 12 members of the formal leadership of the party were elected before the Vox landing in the Cortes, the autonomous communities, the municipalities and the European Parliament in the 2019 election cycle. So there are leaders who now have a very important weight and that They are not in it. The most striking case is precisely that of Espinosa de los Monteros.

At the same time, a similar committee has been created in the area of Organization to dispatch the many issues that have to do with the internal life of the formation, too upset with the configuration of many provincial managers throughout the country. It should be remembered that Vox is a purely centralist party and that the only structure below the national leadership is the one in the different provinces. It does not have autonomous addresses.
