The D66ers Alexandra van Huffelen and Hans Vijlbrief are appointed as the new state secretaries of finance, report political sources to the NOS on Sunday. They succeed Menno Snel, who left at the end of last year because of the childcare allowance affair.
Van Huffelen (51) has a scoop: she will be the first female minister in the Ministry of Finance. She is now a member of the Senate for D66 and director of the Municipal Transport Company in Amsterdam. Before that, she was an alderman in Rotterdam.
Vijlbrief (56) is one of the EU's top officials as the official chair of the Eurogroup. Before that, he was, among other things, deputy director of the Central Planning Office and worked for many years as a senior civil servant at Finance.
According to the NOS , Van Huffelen will be responsible for Customs. It will also consider the allowance affair. Hundreds of parents were mistakenly classified as fraudsters by the Tax Authorities. They had to repay large amounts, which in some cases led to serious financial and personal problems. Van Huffelen must find out how many people have fallen victim to this fraud approach and compensate the victims.
Vijlbrief gets the Tax Authorities in his portfolio and is at the head of a thorough reform. After the departure of State Secretary Snel, Finance Minister Hoekstra announced that the tax authorities will be divided into three parts: Customs and the Surcharges department will be disconnected. Vijlbrief will also be responsible for the flight tax and the CO2 tax that the government wants to introduce.
