This was stated in the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

As indicated in the department, on the part of Bulgaria “no clear evidence was presented in support of this decision”.

“We regard the official Sofia’s move as openly unfriendly and provocative, contrary to the constructive and traditionally mutually respectful nature of Russian-Bulgarian relations,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Earlier, the Bulgarian prosecutor’s office said that after receiving information from the national security agency, pre-trial proceedings were conducted against two Russian diplomats who are suspected of espionage.

The Russian Embassy said that the diplomatic mission was aware of a message published on the website of the prosecutor's office in Bulgaria.

After that, Bulgaria declared two Russian diplomats persona non grata.
