SNCF CEO Jean-Pierre Farandou, here when he came to Rennes, January 24, 2020. - C. Allain / 20 Minutes

He preferred to travel to "open his brain and see people in situation". This Friday, the new boss of the SNCF Jean-Pierre Farandou was in Rennes to sign the new agreement binding the railway company to the Brittany region. A “reciprocal commitment” which sets the objectives of the two parties for the next ten years on the TER network.

The regional network, which generates 11 million trips each year, was widely applauded by the successor of Guillaume Pépy. “The challenge of improvement is not easy when you are already at a good level, even a very good level. The Breton region is the champion of France for several seasons, it is a kind of PSG of regularity with more than 96% of trains per hour. It's exceptional, ”said Jean-Pierre Farandou. The region can also boast of having a cost per year and per inhabitant estimated at 31 euros to finance its network called Breizhgo. Another record for France, far from the national average established at 57 euros per year and per capita.

A billion to pay for the region

With this new agreement, the region has committed to continuing its investments in favor of railways to the tune of 100 million per year, or one billion euros over the entire duration of the agreement. After ordering numerous regional Regio2N double decker trains in recent years, Brittany will have to unveil its new investment list within a year. "We do not forbid new services," says the vice-president in charge of transport Gérard Lahellec.

In return, the SNCF will have to make its offer "more attractive" and reach the ambitious objective of a 23% increase in the number of passengers by 2029. "It is an additional public service offer", assures the President of the Loïg Chesnais-Girard region.

To satisfy its customers, the SNCF has already undertaken to set up a “passenger guarantee” for its TER subscribers. The latter may be compensated in the event of repeated delays. Proof that all Breton trains are not on time.
