Suzanne Schulting qualified for the final rounds on all distances at the European Championship short track on Friday. All Dutchmen had a successful first day at the tournament in Debrecen in Hungary.
Schulting qualified for the 1,500 meters, as did Lara van Ruijven and Yara van Kerkhof for the semi-finals, which are scheduled for Saturday. The same three short tracksters reached the quarter-finals in the 500 meters and 1,000 meters.
Dutch women qualified for the semi-finals in the relay. Besides Schulting, Van Ruijven and Van Kerkhof, Rianne de Vries was also part of the Dutch team.
With the men, Daan Breeuwsma and Itzhak de Laat qualified for the following three rounds. Together with Dylan Hoogerwerf and Sven Roes they also reached the semifinals of the relay.
Sjinkie Knegt was not selected for the European Championship. The most successful Dutch short track player ever wanted to participate, but national coach Jeroen Otter does not consider him fit enough after he ended up in the hospital with serious burns last year.
Last year at the European Championship short track in Dordrecht, Schulting crowned herself as European champion and also won gold in the 1,500 meters, the super final 3,000 meters and with the relay. In addition, the men won last silver with the relay and Van Ruijven took bronze in the 500 meters.
