Roger Federer qualified Friday for the knockout stages of the Australian Open by overcoming the phenomenal resistance of John Millman 4-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, 4-6 , 7-6 (10/8) and after 4h03 of combat.

The 38-year-old Swiss was led all the super tie break until 4-8. Two points from the defeat, he went on 6 points to conclude the game.

The world No.3, who had lost to Millman in their only Grand Slam match so far, in the knockout stages of the 2018 US Open, committed a staggering number of direct faults: 82 in total, including 48 on his forehand.

Federer will face the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics (67th) for a place in the quarters.
