The blocking of the port facilities of the Grand maritime port of Nantes-Saint-Nazaire continues on Thursday, as in most of the major French ports. This is the “dead port” operation, organized by the CGT union in order to put pressure on the government as part of the fight against pension reform.

Concretely, all the trucks of goods are prevented from access by demonstrators dockers. Tire and pallet fires are lit at the entrances to the ports of Montoir-de-Bretagne and Nantes-Cheviré. Partial blockages had already been carried out in the preceding weeks. A situation that deeply worries business leaders in the region, as well as the president of the Pays-de-la-Loire regional council.

"The consequences are disastrous"

"I appeal to the responsibility of the strikers so that they reestablish access to the Great seaport Nantes-Saint-Nazaire as quickly as possible," warns Christelle Morance (LR). The consequences of the dead port operation are disastrous for the local economy and penalizing in the longer term for the Grand Port. Many companies are already diverting their goods to ports in northern Europe. And there is no guarantee, in a context of very strong competition, that they will want to transit again by Nantes-Saint-Nazaire tomorrow. It cannot last. "
