The new forecourt of the Matabiau station in Toulouse. - Square Eyes

  • After several months of work, the renovation of the historic forecourt of the Matabiau station is complete.
  • Within a year, work will begin on the other side of the tracks, in Marengo, which will see the arrival in 2025 of a new station hall connected to the third metro line.

In Toulouse, you can now walk on the water near Matabiau. In recent weeks, the Canal du Midi has been covered with a wooden platform which extends the historic forecourt of the station where 70 trees have been planted.

A vast site which should be completed in April for a more airy entrance. In any case for this phase of the redevelopment of the district as part of the Toulouse Euros Sud Ouest project, recently renamed "Grand Matabiau - quays of Oc".

By 2030, the Matabiau station should have four forecourts and welcome 150,000 passengers per day, three times more than in 2020. - Europolia

On the Avenue de Lyon side, the demolitions started on January 13th. On the other side of Sémard Boulevard, along the banks of the Canal, work on the lock house is continuing.

“At the same time, we launched a call for projects to install a tavern. The work should be completed in the spring, with the designated operator to develop the interior. Ideally, we would like this to open this summer, ”says Jean-Luc Moudenc (LR), the president of Toulouse Métropole.

Groundbreaking in 2021

It will take a year to see things happen on the Marengo side, where a new forecourt is to see the light of day. But the first picks should first take place underground as part of the third metro line, the station of which will be interconnected with the new hall in 2025 and should ultimately make it possible to absorb passenger flows from the station. With the arrival of the LGV, by 2030 if nothing stops the machine, it should increase threefold, from 50,000 to 150,000 travelers per day.

This will result in the destruction of the SNCF buildings, in particular its regional management, which are wedged between rue de Périole, boulevard Marengo and the SNCF tracks. This is where the grand forecourt will see the light of day.

In addition to providing access to the two metro lines, this multimodal interchange could accommodate buses from the bus station. "We have to decide this year if we keep it in the square or if we move it to the side of Marengo-Périole, we await the results of the studies and we will weigh everything", explains Carole Delga, president of the Occitanie region, decision maker about this question.

An important decision because each year, a million travelers pass through there to go by bus to Paris but also to the four corners of Europe. "Its traffic increased by 3% last year, there were 14,000 movements last year," explains Pascal Boureau of the departmental council, site manager.
