At 12.30 on Thursday, two cars with a total of five people fronted on the E20 north of Mariestad. Emergency services and an ambulance were called to the scene.

"People have been trapped in the cars so we have carried out unloading, but the damage situation on these people is still unclear," says Ulf Seglert, internal commander of the rescue service Östra Skaraborg.

An ambulance helicopter was alerted to the scene

The rescue service also says that an ambulance helicopter was alerted to the scene but that it could not lift due to the weather.

- Four ambulances are in place at the moment and one has been driven to the hospital with an injured person in, says Ulf Seglert, internal commander of the rescue service Östra Skaraborg.

Shortly after 14.30, traffic could be released again in both directions at reduced speeds, according to Morten Gunneng, police officer in the West Region.

Preliminary investigation initiated on gross negligence in traffic

- We have launched a preliminary investigation into gross negligence in traffic, and further criminal charges may be added. Both vehicles that were involved in the accident were seized, Morten Gunneng says.
