"Prevent a possible genocide against the Muslim minority." The International Court of Justice (ICJ), based in The Hague, ordered, on Thursday, January 23, Burma to take "all measures" in its power to avoid further abuses against the Rohingya.

With the support of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Canada and the Netherlands, The Gambia brought international justice proceedings last November for violation of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crime of genocide, adopted in 1948.

Hearings were conducted for three days in December, during which Burmese leader Aung San Suu Ki rejected any genocidal intent against the Rohingya.

The Gambia had notably called for an immediate end to the violence and called on the judges to order Burma to authorize UN experts to investigate on the spot the alleged crimes committed against the Muslim minority.

More than 730,000 Rohingya fled Burma following a military crackdown in 2017 and found refuge in Bangladesh.
