Until now, there has been no legislation protecting the wreck from tourists or adventurers, since the wreck is located on international waters.

In 2003, however, an international agreement was reached, with the United States and the United Kingdom at the forefront, to protect the wreck. An agreement that was subsequently ratified by the United States in November last year.

According to Britain's Minister for Maritime Affairs Nusrat Ghani, the country will now work hard with several other countries to maintain the tomb.

"It will be treated with the sensitivity and respect that deserves the last resting place for more than 1,500 people," she said in a statement to the BBC.

The passenger ship Titanic sank after a collision with an iceberg during its maiden voyage on April 10, 1912. However, the wreck was first found in 1985 about 350 nautical miles off Canada's east coast.
