The working conditions have, according to Kommunal, hardened for the members who work in healthcare.

- It's getting more stress and they can no longer cope, says Malin Andersson.

When the news came that Europe's largest battery factory, which wants to employ thousands of people, is to be built in Skellefteå, many calls came directly from members. For example, they wanted to know how to change jobs.

- People still hear from us and wonder what work there is, says Malin Andersson.

Within a few years, up to 20 per cent of the nurses in Skellefteå retire according to Malin Andersson. She is worried that it will be difficult in the future to obtain trained personnel.

The regional council wants to secure staff

It is a concern shared by Västerbotten regional councilor Richard Carstedt (S). According to him, both the municipality and the region must work to secure staff. It is then about being an exemplary employer and ensuring that the staff feel valuable.

- I think a lot of people will go from existing operations to industry. There we have to make a plan for how to recruit or retain our staff, he says.
