22 January 2020 Moments of tension this morning at the former Ilva in Taranto, when "at 4.30, there were several explosions at the IDF plant serving the converter 1 of steel plant 2. Several gaps were opened in the pipes, near of the stiring pulpit, where there is a transit of personnel for normal refining activities ". This is what the RSUs of Fiom and Uilm report in a note.

"Steel plant 2, confirming what Fiom and Uilm claimed in recent days and verified during the inspection carried out yesterday, cannot sustain the 3-converter production increase and the latest episodes testify to it", say the factory coordinators Fiom and Uilm, Francesco Brigati and Gennaro Oliva.

"Arcelor Mittal - they say - must retrace his steps and immediately suspend the unilateral choice to stop steel plant 1 since the constant postponements and delays on ordinary and extraordinary maintenance determine, in case of production increase, dangerous situations both from the point of view of safety and of the environment ".

In recent days, the French-Indian multinational has told trade unions that the new production structures are due to "a scarce supply of raw materials and the current production capacity linked to orders".
