Tuesday afternoon, significant resources were deployed in Douai, in the North, to try to find a child who could have fallen in the canal, we learned from the firefighters. As of Wednesday morning, the rescue services had still found nothing.

The alert was given on Tuesday, around 4 p.m., by a witness. The latter claimed to have heard "a sound of falling in the water" in a diversion of the Scarpe canal, at the level of the Lahure impasse. In the same place, a schoolboy's bag was recovered. No element capable of determining the identity of the owner was found inside.

Four hours of fruitless research

About fifteen firefighters were sent on site, including two diving units and two dog teams. The research could start as soon as the river circulation was interrupted. While the boat rescue services plied the canal, the shore teams crossed the banks. "The dogs have not marked a place to fall," said the firefighters.

The searches were stopped shortly before 8 p.m. without giving anything. They did not resume this Wednesday morning. A police investigation was opened by the Douai police station.
