A Canadian guide died in a snowmobile accident in northern Quebec on Wednesday. He accompanied eight French tourists who took part in a hike, five of which are missing.

The accident occurred early Tuesday evening in the Lac Saint-Jean region, during a snowmobile ride with a guide and eight French tourists who turned into drama. The police were alerted by two of the tourists who had just recovered one of their own from the icy waters. His craft had pierced the ice as they crossed an "off-piste" area on a river flowing from Lac Saint-Jean, about 225 km north of Quebec City, a spokesman told AFP. from the Sûreté du Québec, Hugues Beaulieu.

Divers looking for survivors

The police and the army were immediately called in for reinforcement. They rescued the expedition guide, a 42-year-old Quebecer who had also fallen into the water, but the man died overnight in the hospital, according to the same source.

"Five French tourists are still missing," said the spokesman. Eight divers from the Sûreté du Québec arrived on the spot at the start of the morning to participate in the research and try to find possible survivors.

The spokesman does not rule out the possibility that these five tourists could have found refuge in a chalet overnight, even if this assumption is "fairly improbable" according to him. "This sector was not part of a marked trail, they were off-piste," said the spokesman.
