  • René Goscinny died in 1977, it is however the first time that a statue is erected in Paris in tribute to the most famous of French comic book authors.
  • The tribute paid to him is part of the comic book year.
  • The statue is located opposite 56, rue de Boulainvilliers, in Paris, where Goscinny lived between 1967 and 1977 and wrote most of his masterpieces.

They met on Thursday at noon: Franck Riester, the Minister of Culture, Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, Anne Goscinny, his daughter, Sempé, his old accomplice of Petit Nicolas , Jul, the new screenwriter of Lucky Luke , Emmanuel Guibert, one of the finalists, like last year, of the Angoulême Grand Prix, Véronique Cabu, the wife of the designer of Charlie Hebdo who had signed La Potachologie with him…

All will pay tribute to René Goscinny, whose three-meter bronze statue was erected in front of the windows of 56, rue de Boulainvilliers (Paris XVI), where the famous comic book writer lived the last ten years of his life, between 1967 and 1977.

Asterix in hand, Lucky Luke at his feet

The statue represents the most famous comic scriptwriters standing on the library of his main works, his characters at his side: Asterix in his hand, Little Nicolas on his shoulder, Lucky Luke at his feet.

"It is a tribute to the author of comics, more than to his creations which ended up largely overshadowing him," insists Aymar du Chatenet, the administrator of the René-Goscinny Institute. It was time to remember that this man revolutionized comics in France and propelled it into the category of major arts. The choice of the Ministry of Culture to make 2020 the year of comics goes in this direction. This is a strong sign that can only help move the lines if not the bubbles, at least… ”

For Aymar du Chatenet, the most remarkable in the statue of René Goscinny signed Sébastien Langloÿs, "it is his smile and these diamond-shaped dimples on both sides of the lips". Two details that are barely perceptible, even when you get close, but which clearly convey the humor and the joie de vivre of an author of genius far too soon gone.
