• Politics. The City Council fixes the monuments of 11-M

"Lack of dignity." With these three words, the mayor of Vox at the City Council of Madrid Fernando Martínez-Vidal during the Culture Commission has defined the monument to the victims of the jihadist attacks of March 11. And it is, precisely for that reason, that he has requested his withdrawal once the works of the Atocha station and its surroundings are undertaken.

"This monument has no arrangement, it seems more a smoke outlet than anything else," said the councilor who said that in Madrid there is a tribute "that remembers with dignity" the 191 victims who were killed 16 years ago in the capital for jihadist terrorism: the Forest of the Absent . "There each victim has a tree in the Retiro park ," he said.

From the municipal government they explain to Efe that nobody has formally raised the debate about the future of this monument, which is currently being repaired with an investment of 350,000 euros undertaken by the City Council and the Ministry of Development in the face of the severe deterioration suffered.

From the formation of radical right they hope that the reform that the municipal government intends to undertake in the area for which it will convene a contest of ideas serves to remove this monument. This first international competition of ideas on which the municipal corporation and the Official College of Architects of Madrid ( COAM ) will work will focus on reforming the gazebo of Carlos V , the front area of the Atocha station until reaching the Pavilion of Illustrious Men and the environment of the Reina Sofía Museum will also be included to "provide homogeneity and integrity" to this area of the city.

A reform that from the corporation linked yesterday with the expansion of the Atocha station, which according to the plan drawn up by the Ministry of Development will double its capacity with a new underground station, a project that when announced - in March 2018 - was expected end in 2023.

The general director of Cultural Heritage of the capital, Luis Lafuente, has explained that the axis of Prado-Recoletos and the roundabout are to be remodeled to integrate them into the expansion of the station, which will have a double entrance, one in the Emperor Carlos's roundabout V and another in Méndez Álvaro.

The reform, which the Vice Mayor Begoña Villacís today promised in an election campaign, "will affect sidewalks, squares and urban areas ", to expand the current cultural axis towards the Pavilion of Illustrious Men, the Royal Tapestry Factory and towards Ronda de Valencia, with the Reina Sofía Museum and the Casa Encendida to sell a "cultural Madrid" brand idea.
