Al-Jazeera correspondent reported that the Green Zone in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, shortly after midnight, was attacked by Katyusha rockets, while at least three were killed and about a hundred others wounded in angry demonstrations in Baghdad and a number of central and southern governorates yesterday evening Monday.

The reporter said that there were no casualties in the missile strikes, nor was it confirmed the nature of the targets targeted by the missiles in the heavily fortified Green Zone, which includes Western and Arab embassies in addition to the headquarters of many government institutions.

Reuters news agency quoted sources as saying that the three missiles were launched from the Zafaraniya area outside Baghdad, adding that two of them landed near the American embassy.

For its part, the security media cell at the Iraqi Joint Operations Command said in a statement that three "Katyusha" missiles fell in the vicinity of the Green Zone near the American embassy in Baghdad.

Iraqi security sources reported that the rockets did not cause any casualties, and said they were launched from areas south of Baghdad.

This is the fourth attack of its kind since the killing of the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Qassem Soleimani and the leader of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis in a US air strike near Baghdad airport on January 3.

Five days later, Iran responded by launching ballistic missiles at two military bases hosting American soldiers in northern and western Iraq.

Washington accuses the Iraqi "Hezbollah" brigades, funded and trained by Iran, of being behind the missile attacks on the embassy and Iraqi military bases hosting American soldiers.

The Brigades did not deny or confirm these accusations. In the aftermath of the assassination of Soleimani and the engineer, the brigades called on Iraqi forces to move away from the locations of the American forces within a thousand meters.

The American-Iranian military confrontation sparked widespread public and governmental anger in Iraq, amid fears that the country would turn into an open arena of conflict between the United States and Iran, before the tension subsided in the past few days.

On the other hand, three demonstrators were killed and twenty wounded in the city of Nasiriyah, following clashes with the security forces yesterday, with the expiration of a deadline they set for the authorities to implement the reforms they demanded for more than three months.

The country has been witnessing protests since the first of last October. The demonstrators gave the government, last Monday, one week to implement the reforms, otherwise escalation.

The protesters are demanding early legislative elections based on a new electoral law, choosing an independent prime minister, and holding corrupt officials accountable.

In a statement, the army announced that it had arrested nine protesters and reopened the main road in the capital.

Violence in demonstrations across the country has killed about 460 people, most of them protesters, and wounded more than 25,000.
