Jean-Yves Le Drian was visiting Algiers on Tuesday. He met with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Relations were discussed between the two countries, but also Libya. On this issue, Algerian diplomacy is increasing the number of meetings to make its position heard.

It shares with Libya 1,000 kilometers of border where more than 50,000 soldiers are mobilized. For Algeria, the destabilization of the neighboring country is a question of security. National security first, but also for the Sahel region, since Algiers is concerned about the presence of foreign armed groups and the possibility of the circulation of weapons and men then to the Sahel.

This position of neighbors, but also of regional military power, allows it to make its vision heard: for Algiers, there needs to be a political solution , an inclusive national dialogue with all the actors, including armed Islamist groups, a point on which it disagrees with Cairo.

So at the end of December, the hypothesis of a military escalation after the Turkish announcement of sending troops to support the government of national harmony against General Haftar strongly reacted the Algerian diplomacy which was rather discreet on this question in 2019 .

Algiers therefore asked the UN to take responsibility and enforce the embargo on the shipment of weapons. And she received officials from the different countries involved. The next visit announced is that of Turkish President Erdogan.

Jean-Yves Le Drian said at the press conference that Algiers was " committed to respecting state sovereignty and political dialogue " and that it was " listened to and respected on these grounds ".
