In Tunisia, the president has just appointed a new head of government after the failure of the previous one. Elyes Fakhfakh, a 47-year-old engineer, will have to form a team and submit it to Parliament's confidence vote. If it fails, the latter could be dissolved in mid-March.

The President of the Republic did not give in to pressure from the big parties by deciding in favor of Elyes Fakhfakh. The former Minister of Tourism and then Finance under the two Troika governments, in 2011, has proven to be one of the least politically partisan figures.

He was certainly an unsuccessful presidential candidate in September, with 0.34% in the first round, collecting 11,500 votes, but his skills have been put forward, in recent days, in his ability to work for the economic recovery of the country.

After the failure of Habib Jemli, candidate proposed by Ennahdha, who did not gain the confidence of the Parliament, on January 10, the Head of State consulted the political parties which provided him, in writing, the names of around twenty candidates.

Elyes Fakhfakh will have, in the coming month, to form a government capable of collecting at least 109 of the 217 votes of the Parliament. The task promises to be difficult as the hemicycle resulting from the October legislative elections is made up of a mosaic of parties, the first of which, Ennahdha, has 54 deputies, followed by Qalb Tounes with 36 representatives.

The threat of a dissolution of Parliament could push MEPs to find compromises in order to avoid calling early parliamentary elections.
