The High Court today issued its verdict against the 29-year-old man who was sentenced by the district court to murder for prison 16 years. The High Court also convicted the man of murder for the same punishment.

It was on November 12, 2019, that the Haparanda District Court sentenced a 29-year-old man to 16 years in prison for the murder of a 25-year-old woman in Kalix. The man should have strangled the woman.

The 29-year-old appealed against the district court's ruling and wanted the High Court to acquit him from the prosecution. According to the man, it was not investigated that the woman was robbed of life by another because several different narcotic substances were found in her blood after the death and that it was unclear what caused her death. But the court of law thus goes on the line of district court.

Ask about murder

- Through the investigation presented in the case, it is clear that it was the 29-year-old man who intentionally caused the woman's death by strangulation. In such a case, it is a murder, says the court's chairman, Chief Justice Erik Sundström.

The man shall also pay damages to the deceased's relative and the estate.
