Thousands of activists in favor of weapons have gathered on Monday in the US city of Richmond, Virginia, for a demonstration that is taking place under great surveillance and a state of emergency declared by the authorities who fear the violence of the groups of extreme right.

Protesters gather in front of the Capitol building for the so-called 'Lobby Day' organized by the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL), which opposes the gun control laws proposed by the Democrats who control the Government of Virginia.

The VCDL has condemned what it considers a violation of the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, which states that "the right of persons to have and bear arms should not be infringed . " This amendment has sown controversy over the years and has been the subject of many different interpretations.

The Supreme Court ruled that people have the right to have guns in their homes, but let states determine how weapons can be transported.

President Donald Trump, an important lobby ally in favor of weapons, expressed support for protesters on Friday on Twitter.

"That's what happens when you vote for the Democrats, they will take your weapons away. Republicans will win Virginia in 2020. Thank you, Democrats!" He wrote.

Richmond was the capital of the Confederation for Slavery, and Virginia has traditionally inclined towards conservatives.

But the state, which borders Washington, passed in November to Democrats, who promised to address what they considered a laxity around firearms laws, particularly after a shooting in May 2019 in Virginia Beach that left 12 dead.

The proposed laws will ban shippers with more than 10 rounds of ammunition, purchase more than one weapon per month , and allow judges to confiscate weapons from individuals considered dangerous.

However, a draft ban on the sale of semi-automatic rifles was abandoned. The new restrictions have been harshly criticized by the entire state, and more than 100 counties and towns have been declared as sanctuaries of the Second Amendment , threatening not to apply them.

The security around the Capitol Square is maximum on Monday and the authorities have arranged police reinforcements to avoid any misconduct, as several groups of extreme right attend.

Democratic Governor Ralph Northam on Wednesday declared a state of emergency for the site of the demonstration, which has been in effect since Friday and will continue until tomorrow night.
