The timing is strange. While the dispute over the pension reform continues in the country, the Minister of the Interior will be on Monday traveling to Rennes. Official reason for the visit of Christophe Castaner? A visit to the construction site of the new prefecture. But also a good way to come and support Carole Gandon, candidate for The Republic on the march in the municipal elections.

We have been hearing for years about the construction of a new prefecture in Rennes. Current tenants of the Ille-et-Vilaine departmental council, state agents should move into their brand new offices in 2021. The site has just started, and will be revealed to Christophe Castaner on Monday. In the minds of opponents of pension reform, this displacement is almost experienced as a provocation. "Force Ouvrière calls to wish Christophe Castaner welcome", specifies the departmental secretary of the union Fabrice Le Restif.

Denounce “the absence of dialogue”

The union official calls for a rally at 10:30 am in République to "denounce the absence of dialogue" with the government. According to the unions, instructions have been given to the police not to let protesters approach the minister while on the move. After visiting the boulevard d'Armorique construction site, Christophe Castaner will have to reach the city center to address the staff of the prefecture and wish them well. No doubt opponents of the reform will try to be heard.

The Minister also appears as a strong support for the candidate of The Republic on the march Carole Gandon. Novice in politics, the latter has a deficit of notoriety to fill vis-à-vis the outgoing mayor Nathalie Appéré. And hope for support from the current executive.

The Minister of the Interior is strongly criticized by the trade union organizations, which reproach the sometimes excessive use of force on the part of the police officers or gendarmes framing the demonstrations. In Rennes, two men lost an eye during social conflicts. The first in 2016 during the dispute against the Labor law. The second last year during a gathering of "yellow vests". In both cases, an LBD shot would cause the injury. Investigations are still ongoing.
