January 18, 2020 An Italian tourist was arrested for drawing on a stone in the Torres del Paine National Park, one of the most important areas of the southern country located in Patagonia and known for its spectacular landscapes. "He acknowledged his participation in the crime," explained the head of the Criminal Investigation Brigade (Bicrim) of the Puerto Natales Investigation Police (POI), José Soto.

The arrest took place days after the Italian apologized on social networks for making a drawing of a woman with green hair who symbolically embraces the Torres del Paine, three granite massifs of about 2600 meters high and shaped by force glacial ice.

Located in the Magallanes region in the south of the country, they have been chosen by National Geographic as the fifth most beautiful place in the world. "I officially apologize to all of Chile for the horrendous gesture made in the park. I sincerely apologize," wrote Elisa Tessuti on her Instagram account.

The National Forestry Authority (Conaf) yesterday announced a complaint against the tourist for damages in the park and reiterated that protected spaces "do not need your art, they need your respect, your care and your protection" . The Italian case took place in the same week in which six foreign nationals, including a Chilean, were arrested and expelled from Peru for damaging the Machu Picchu Historical Shrine, located in the Peruvian region of Cuzco.
