“The Office of Promising Research Projects has concluded projects and has signed a contract with Lockheed Martin for $ 31.9 million for a program to integrate OpFires third stage weapons systems,” the company’s website said in a statement.

It is noted that the OpFires program involves the development of a new ground-based system that allows a hypersonic missile system to overcome enemy air defense.

It is also reported that these land-based missiles are important for the US Army in the matter of quick response and suppression of enemy threats.

Earlier, the US Under Secretary of Defense for Procurement and Logistics, Ellen Lord, said the United States intends to significantly intensify the development of protection against unmanned aerial vehicles and hypersonic weapons.
