Sveaskog describes how recurring grazing damage by elk during wintertime means that the company cannot meet either the Forest Conservation Act or the company's own maintenance goals in the relevant areas.

Problems for forest owners

The forest company also believes that the current management system is unable to deal with the problem of migratory moose and concentration areas, since the hunting season for moose normally ends before the moose reach winter grazing areas.

- Protective shooting is the last measure to be able to deal with the extensive grazing damage associated with hiking sales. As it seems now, we are planting new plants that the elk then eat up during wintertime and we get to know from the Swedish Forest Agency that we are unable to meet the statutory requirement for replanting, ”says Mikael Lundberg, forest management manager at Sveaskog.
