In Senegal, the work of the steering committee of the National Dialogue began Tuesday, January 14. Announced in May 2019 by President Macky Sall after his re-election, this dialogue brings together more than a hundred participants, politicians and civil society.

The establishment of this National Dialogue has taken time. The chairman of the steering committee recognizes this, but the serious things begin for Famara Ibrahima Sagna. The time for adjustments and delays is now behind us. Now is the time to start a work that is both considerable for its scope and unprecedented in its importance, its objective of transcending all cleavages and blocks. "

Regarding political issues such as the electoral calendar or the sponsorship system, a dedicated commission already exists. But for Nicole Gakou, of the majority, there is no conflict of interest: “ The Political Commission has done excellent work so far which will be integrated into what we are doing. That is what national dialogue is . "

But these discussions begin with large absentees.

The opposition of Ousmane Sonko, Idrissa Seck and Abdoulaye Wade's Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) are notably not present. Conversely, Babacar Gaye, former spokesperson for the PDS, wanted to be present: “ The PDS is an autonomous party to settle certain political questions and in this case the electoral code, the electoral register. We, who are a current of thought within the Senegalese Democratic Party, we felt we had to be present ”.

Several participants believed that political questions should not monopolize the debates. Other themes should be addressed such as the management of oil and gas resources, employment or even peace and security. For the environmental activist Haïdar el Ali , it is important to discuss the management of the Senegalese oil windfall: “ Getting along, to develop our country and manage our natural resources. This is the purpose of my presence here ”.
