Iran attacked the European position on its nuclear file against the background of the European Union's activation of the dispute settlement mechanism, in response to Tehran's reduction of its nuclear commitment. On the other hand, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that the solution to the Iranian crisis is its agreement to discuss a new expanded agreement and the United States to ease sanctions on it, while Germany expressed its rejection of any new agreement.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that since Washington left the nuclear agreement, the European trio (France, Germany and Britain) have only issued useless data, noting that the European side has succumbed to US sanctions, which constituted a clear violation of the terms of the nuclear agreement, as he put it.

In this context, Abbas Araghchi, Iran's deputy foreign minister for political affairs, considered activating the dispute settlement mechanism over the nuclear agreement a wrong choice that came at the wrong time.

Araghchi stressed that Tehran is committed to the nuclear agreement, and that steps to reduce the commitment are reversible if the European side abides by its obligations. But he made clear that Iran has the right to reduce its commitment to the agreement, as long as the European parties do not live up to their pledges.

Examine a new agreement
For his part, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani rejected the idea of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to replace the nuclear deal with an agreement supported by US President Donald Trump, warning European soldiers in the region, and said that they might become in danger similar to the situation of American soldiers.

On the other hand, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that the only way to resolve the current crisis with Iran is through Tehran's agreement to discuss a new broad agreement and America gradually easing sanctions against it.

Speaking to the European Parliament on Wednesday, Ludrian noted that the efforts made by his country and European partners since September 2017 to initiate new negotiations that include Iran's nuclear activities after 2015 and its ballistic missile program and regional activities, in exchange for reducing US sanctions, are the only way forward.

The French minister added that the Iranian nuclear agreement is in danger because of the repeated violations committed by Tehran, as he described it.

For its part, Germany rejected the invitation of the British Prime Minister and the French Foreign Minister to replace the nuclear agreement with Iran with a new agreement to ensure that it does not possess a nuclear weapon.

In response to a question on the island, the German Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed that his country takes seriously what Johnson mentioned about the agreement, adding that London was a partner - even in the last statement - in calling for preserving the agreement.
