Kiev has asked Iran to hand over the black boxes of the Ukrainian airliner that was shot down near Tehran a week ago, Ukrainian authorities said on Wednesday. The General Prosecutor's Office and the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) have sent an official request to this effect to the Iranian authorities, the prosecution said in a statement.

"The Ukrainian side is doing everything possible to ensure the proper decryption of flight recorders and preserve the evidence in the investigation of the disaster," said the prosecution. Kiev also said on Tuesday that a senior Iranian official is expected to visit Ukraine in the coming days to "determine the laboratory" that could be responsible for analyzing the black boxes.

France was in the short list

According to Ukrainian media, another possible destination for the decryption of black boxes was France. Canadian experts dispatched to Tehran to investigate the crash on Monday will also have access to the aircraft’s wreckage and black boxes, Canadian officials said Monday.

After two days of official denials, the Iranian armed forces admitted on Saturday that they had “mistakenly” shot down the Boeing 737 of Ukraine International Airlines a few minutes after taking off in Tehran. All 176 people on board, mostly Iranians and Canadians, died.
