The inhabitants of the capital of Serbia Belgrade and Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital Sarajevo have for several days struggled with such severe air pollution that the two cities are on the list of the world's most polluted places.

According to Serbian media, Prime Minister Ana Brnabic on Wednesday called a crisis meeting for several authorities and ministers to discuss how to deal with the situation. In Belgrade, the situation has further deteriorated due to dense fog.

So-called PM2.5 particles found in polluted air and measured in micrograms can have devastating health consequences. The World Health Organization's WHO recommendation is a maximum of 10 per cubic meter of air. Belgrade has had over 300 these days, while Sarajevo has reached over 400.

In Sarajevo, the authorities have discouraged residents from opening the windows or leaving the home, writes Al Jazeera Balkans.
