The assassinations of representatives of civil society have multiplied since the start of 2020 in Colombia. The UN counts 10 while other NGOs count 18 in two weeks.

It is a cry of alarm that has just launched the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations. According to the United Nations, ten representatives of Colombian civil society have been murdered since the start of the year. Some NGOs suggest the figure of 18 dead.

These murders were perpetrated mainly in four departments which alone account for more than 50% of the murders. Regions where criminal groups are swarming and which have seen the arrival in recent years of new armed groups, following the departure of the FARC after the signing of the peace agreement which ended more than 50 years of conflict.

Accelerate the implementation of the peace agreement

" Figures that demonstrate the gravity of the problem, but which hide the structural reasons for this violence, " said the UN. And to try to curb these assassinations, the United Nations believes that the implementation of the peace agreement must be accelerated because the state remains absent in these regions which were once in the hands of FARC guerrillas.

Paramilitary groups inherited from the conflict with the FARC are also targeted. A long-term job, a permanent challenge, which will only be possible if the Colombian authorities get down to it.

If these murders continue at the same rate, the sad record of the past year may well be broken. In 2019, 107 representatives of civil society were murdered in Colombia.

In #Colombia #, 107 human rights defenders were killed in 2019.

Attacking them "is unacceptable and constitutes an attack on democracy," warns the UN🇺🇳 (@ONU_derechos). @ ONUHumanRights | @MisionONUCol @onucolombia | @CINUBogota https://t.co/Sjd9VzwDTv
