The spruce bark drill has so far caused damage to approximately seven billion cubic meters of forest worth several billion SEK. And it still looks dark, according to a forecast from the Swedish Forest Agency, one fifth of the forest in southern Sweden risks being knocked out by attack. The greatest risks are in Jönköping County, Blekinge and Västmanland.

Measures must be taken early to combat the insect pest. Therefore, the Swedish Forest Agency has now developed a new mapping service that shows where the risks are greatest.

"It helps forest owners steer the steps in the right direction so that they can more easily find the attacks when the fir bark drills again begin to swarm forward in the spring," says Alice Högström, project manager at the Swedish Forest Agency.
