The Iranian president makes his mea culpa. In a televised address broadcast on Tuesday January 14, Hassan Rohani assured that his country should "punish" all those responsible for the crash of the Ukraine Airlines flight, shot down "by mistake" by an Iranian missile on January 8 near Tehran, killing the 176 passengers on board.
"It is an unforgivable mistake ... one person cannot be held responsible," said Hassan Rohani. "The Iranian armed forces who admit their mistake is a good first step. But we must make sure that it never happens again," he said, adding that his government was "accountable to the Iranians and the other nations who lost lives in this accident. "
The Iranian president has assured that the crime will not go unpunished and that a "thorough investigation" will be carried out in order to establish responsibilities. "For our people, it is very important in this accident that anyone who has been at fault or neglect on any level" be prosecuted, he said. "All those who should be punished will be punished," he said.
