Today's fire protection is well regulated in today's building legislation, says Christer Björkman. The same fire protection rules apply to wood as to concrete. Thus, one building material does not entail greater risks than the other.

- No you can't say that wood is more flammable for people staying in such a building. What is different can be the residual value, ie our ability to extinguish the fire in the construction itself. But if we have had a very strong fire in concrete, it is also very affected and may need to be replaced, says Christer Björkman.

Want to see a clearer dialogue and more research

At the same time, he thinks that the emergency services need to develop their own methods as he believes that higher demands will be placed on fire protection in the future.

- This applies to both methods and techniques in how we extinguish the fires that occur. We need to use less water and find methods to know where it is burning, where to apply the water, how we get into the construction and how we ventilate fire gases that are liable to ignite. But I would also like to see a clearer dialogue and much more research on how to secure buildings afterwards.
