Al-Jazeera obtained a leaked letter from inside the heavily guarded Scorpion prison in Egypt, revealing that one of the detainees - Ahmed Abdullah Dabaan - attempted suicide by slaughtering himself with a sharp machine due to the torture and harsh conditions inside the prison.

The letter indicated that the detainee was taken to hospital for treatment and then returned to prison again, despite his critical condition due to the prison administration's fear that the news of the suicide attempt would spread.

She also revealed that the hunger strikers protested what had been suffered by their colleague, so the prison administration threatened them with arresting their relatives to force them to end the protest and strike, explaining that the administration isolated the strikers from the rest of the prisoners after they refused to respond to their threats.

The message included an appeal to the media and human rights organizations to pressure the Egyptian government to provide them with human prison conditions that take into account the most basic humanitarian needs.

It is reported that a few days ago, activists launched an electronic campaign entitled "#Cold Pinch Scorpion" in solidarity with the detainees of the highly-guarded Tora-1 prison known as "Scorpio", against the violations they face, which were aggravated by the frost and the harshness of the prison authorities.

The campaign aims to shed light on the suffering of detainees between torture, disease and cold, especially that a number of detainees have lost their lives inside the prison itself due to the exacerbation of diseases as a result of severe cold.
