The model of postcards sent to Emmanuel Macron demanding justice for Sarah Halimi - Israelite Haut-Rhin Consistory

  • The mobilization of part of the Jewish community around the controversial decision on the alleged murderer of Sarah Halimi, declared criminally irresponsible by the investigative chamber of the court of appeal, continues.
  • In Alsace, 450 postcards intended for Emmanuel Macron were signed this Sunday at the initiative of the Jewish consistory of Haut-Rhin.
  • The signatories hope that the Court of Cassation will question this decision and also call for an amendment to the law on criminal irresponsibility.

The mobilization of part of the Jewish community continues after the controversial decision in the Sarah Halimi case, a Jewish sexagenarian killed in Paris in 2017.

His presumed murderer was indeed declared criminally irresponsible at the end of the hearing of the investigative chamber of the court of appeal. While protest rallies took place in early January in Paris and Marseille, in Alsace, 450 postcards intended for Emmanuel Macron were signed this Sunday at the initiative of the Jewish consistory of Haut-Rhin.

450 signatories in two hours

The institution relied on the communities of Colmar and Mulhouse to call "all those who are indignant at the recent court decision in this case, whether or not they are of the Jewish faith," to send a card to President of the Republic.

"In two short hours, we had 300 people from the Jewish community above all, but also about fifty Christians and atheists who came to sign these cards," said Laurent Schilli, secretary general of the institution, to 20 Minutes . In addition, almost 150 additional cards were signed by proxy.

At the origin of this initiative, Edith Geismar, treasurer of the presbytery, says that it was her daughter, who worked with Sarah Halimi as childcare worker for three years in Paris, who had this idea. "She reacted on social networks to express her indignation and we said to ourselves" Why not send cards directly to the Elysée Palace ". A photographer friend helped us with making and printing and we started the movement ”.

They demand a change in the law

In Alsace, the Sarah Halimi affair “resonates with local news”, as Laurent Schilli explains. The serial desecration of Israelite cemeteries across the region worries the Jewish community. "It makes me sick," says Edith Geismar, who saw the stele of her great-grandfather shattered in Westhoffen. Interior Minister Christophe Castaner, who went there, announced in the process the creation of a "national office to fight against hate".

To the point of questioning court decisions? "We are aware of the importance of the separation of powers," says Laurent Schilli. But we undertook this symbolic action to inform him of our misunderstanding after [this decision] ”. Beyond the symbol, the signatories of these cards hope that the Court of Cassation will question the position of the Court of Appeal on the alleged murderer of Sarah Halimi.

Find my question for Madame la Garde des Sceaux on the Halimi-Traoré affair, today at 3:53 p.m. in the video below. I question him in particular on the principle of criminal irresponsibility.https: //t.co/QNzF3aZIx5 pic.twitter.com/9TGOa8Sgd2

They are also calling for an amendment to the law on criminal irresponsibility. Laurent Schilli makes the link between this murder and the Chalom Levy affair. In 2016, this Strasbourg retiree wearing a kippah had been seriously injured with a knife in the Alsatian capital. A request relayed by several politicians, including Senator Haut-Rhin Jean-Marie Bockel, who challenged the government on this subject on January 8.
