January 13, 2020 "Whether or not to allow entry is a Chinese sovereignty right." Beijing said the day after rejecting the request by Kenneth Roth, Head of the Human Rights Watch (HRW) NGO to enter Hong Kong where he was supposed to present the annual report of the global human rights organization. It was Roth himself who denounced the fact that he was stuck at the Hong Kong airport where he entered freely without problems in the past.

"This year the report describes how the Chinese government is threatening the international human rights system - he wrote on Twitter - but the authorities have just barred my entry into Hong Kong, showing how the problem is getting worse." Roth said the refusal of the entry visa was justified only on vague "immigration grounds". And he stressed that the fact "is another sign that Beijing is narrowing the oppressive yoke over Hong Kong."

Human Rights Watch has now anticipated the presentation of the 2020 report, originally scheduled for Wednesday at the Foreign Correspondents' Club in Hong Kong, tomorrow at the United Nations in New York.

It's striking how no one would take responsibility for barring me from Hong Kong to release @ HRW's World Report highlighting Beijing's assault on the human rights system. The decider was some anonymous official. The only explanation: "immigration reasons." https://t.co/Y8uHulKoa4
