In Thailand, thousands of demonstrators showed their opposition to the government this Sunday January 12 during a foot race in a park in Bangkok. It is the most significant political event since 2014.

With our correspondent in Bangkok, Carol Isoux

The sun had not yet risen as there were already several thousand flocking to a park on the outskirts of Bangkok, dressed in T-shirts " Running to chase Uncle ", the half-affectionate, half-ironic nickname given to the Prime Minister whose resignation they are demanding. Most are students, for them, the new generation can no longer accept the excesses of its elders.

" The people have no rights "

" The Prime Minister says that he came to power through the democratic system but not at all, he used force and cunning to his advantage. In Thailand in reality the people have no rights, they are never taken into account, ”testifies a young man.

This dawn race is the most important public political event since 2014 and the latest coup organized by the Nouvel Avenir party, the youth party, recently threatened with dissolution by the Constitutional Court.

Generational shock

But in response, thousands of government supporters also gathered in a park in the city center, some ten kilometers away. The average age is much higher there, revealing a generation shock in the country.

Thailand has been mired for decades in a deep division of society between conservatives and reformists, especially on issues that affect the military, justice and the monarchy.
