11 January 2020About two thousand people gathered in a space between a car body shop and a petrol station on Via di Ponte Galeria, to demonstrate against the decision of the M5s junta of Virginia Raggi to build a service landfill in Monte Carnevale, on the border with the Municipality of Fiumicino. Around the stage they brought a cross, a coffin and a hearse for the 'walking dead' who live in the area.

The event, as well as the area chosen for the possible reservoir, is located less than 10 kilometers from Malagrotta, which for almost 50 years has hosted the city's waste in the largest landfill in Europe.

From Saturday morning the streets that arrive in the Galeria Valley are full of signs asking to stop the landfill and say "No to Malagrotta 2". In the square, posters, T-shirts and banners talk about the "free Galeria Valley", and then the "right to health for children" in the area.

Residents of the area, of nearby Massimina, Monte Stallonara and Parco Leonardo but also of Falcognana came down to the square. Among the protesters Silvia Crescimano, the M5s president of the XII Town Hall, adjacent to the Monte Carnevale area.

During the week, the Town Hall asked with a vote on the Capitol to withdraw the resolution on Monte Carnevale and sent a dossier to emphasize that the area is not suitable for a new landfill. The majority of the local administration's M5s is in danger of being shattered by the choice of the Raggi committee to locate a new reservoir in the area.

For years, in fact, the Movement had embraced the battles of the territorial committees against waste in the Galeria Valley. After the speeches from the stage, the organizers invited those present to a peaceful demonstration and not to block the streets.

The organizers: we will go to the Capitol or to the Region
"Since 2012 nothing has changed here - say the promoters of the Committee, who spoke in various speeches before the procession - We await the decisions of the Municipality and Region. If it is useful, after today, we will remove ourselves and we will go to demonstrate in the Capitol or in the Region .

Valle Galeria, an area already massacred, has been Rome's dustbin for 50 years, with an "unwelcome guest, Malagrotta", paying in terms of environmental destruction, in terms of public health, with a tumor rate of 28% higher than average of the municipality of Rome.

Let's not forget that in the Galeria Valley other sites have also been indicated that cannot be considered in any way as exchange currency and that for that of Monte Carnevale the authorization process for a landfill for aggregates was closed on December 27th. The only admissible intervention in the Galeria Valley is that aimed at the rehabilitation and remediation of the Malagrotta site ".

Other municipalities participate
Also present at the event were citizens of Massimina, Fiano Romano, Pisana, representatives of environmental associations, parties and, among others, the vice mayor of Fiumicino, Ezio di Genesio Pagliuca: "Here we go again. We went down to the streets to reiterate all of them together: we said no to the Tragliatella landfill and, with the same firmness, we also say to the hypothesis of a new plant at Monte Carnevale. A choice, once again, incomprehensible. The plant would rise next to the old Malagrotta landfill , above the aquifers of Fiumicino, near the Rome refinery and a few kilometers from the airport ".
