Thousands of Scots have claimed independence on the streets of Glasgow on Saturday, in the largest demonstration in favor of the break with the United Kingdom since the 2014 sovereign referendum. The march has been the first of the eight planned throughout this year by the organization All Under One Banner (All Under a Flag) in support of the call for a second referendum in 2020, sponsored by the main minister and leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP), Nicola Sturgeon.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will become the two political epicenters of the United Kingdom this year after the completion of Brexit, scheduled for January 31. In Belfast, the local Stormont Assembly has met today for the first time in three years following the agreement reached by the Unionist Democratic Party (DUP) and Sinn Fein to form a coalition government.

The agreement puts an end to the political 'impasse' that lasted since 2017 and has led to the rebound in the terrorist activities of the New IRA and the paramilitary groups. The pact was made possible by the simultaneous pressure of London and Dublin, and the introduction of a clause that equates Gaelic with English as the official language Northern Ireland.

"We will seek common ground despite our differences," DUP leader Arlene Foster anticipated. "As we approach the centenary of the partition of Ireland (in 2021), we will try not to relive the struggles of the past," said Michelle O? Neill , Ulster leader of Sinn Fein, who has reiterated her objective of holding a reunification referendum of the island in the coming years.

In Scotland, meanwhile, the Labor Party has expressed for the first time that it is considering supporting a second independence referendum, according to local leader Richard Leonard . Labor deputy Ben Bradshaw ventured on his part that independence will win in a new vote and recommended that the political class in the United Kingdom recognize "the right to self-determination of Scots."

"Independence can be touched," Sturgeon has said in the massive rally in Glasgow that opened the doors to his electoral victory with 44% of the vote in the 12D elections. Sturgeon has given its symbolic support to the new march organized by All Under One Banner, where all the independence groups shake hands, beyond the SNP.

The demonstration has departed from Kelvingrove Park and has flooded the city with flags of the San Andres Cross until it reaches Glasgow Green. The police have not provided official data, but the organizers say that the call has finally brought together 100,000 protesters. Despite the success of the SNP and the impulse to hold the second referendum, support for independence is very similar to that registered in 2014: 45% in favor and 55% against, according to the latest polls.

After the 12D elections, Nicola Sturgeon sent a letter to the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson , demanding the transfer of powers to the Scottish Parliament in order to convene the consultation in the second half of 2020. Johnson has flatly refused to hold a new query and stressed that the result of six years ago "is valid for a whole generation."
